Energy Forum 2011: Energy Security and Sustainability-Global Challenges

Dr. Sam Mannan was moderator of the “Safety Engineering in the Energy Sector” Special Session at the Energy Forum 2011: Energy Security and Sustainability- Global Challenges. Members of the panel included David Miller, Director, Standards at the American Petroleum Institute, and Robin Pitblado, Energy Director at HSE Services DNV (Det Norske Veritas). The panelists discussed the attention to and concern over the safety of deepwater offshore energy systems. More broadly, safety engineering in the energy sector is more important than ever as we explore the viability of new sources of energy; conversion processes; logistics; distribution infrastructure; and end use technologies integrated within existing systems. Intelligent risk-based decision making must enable new energy industries rather than impede them, while ensuring the absolute safety of workers. The panel explored safety engineering and discussed its importance in the broad energy sector.

The Forum, sponsored by ConocoPhillips, was held at the Hilton in College Station, Texas, on February 1-2, 2011. The two-day Energy Forum was hosted by the Texas A&M Energy Engineering Institute (EEI). The event included a keynote speech presented by Dr. Arun Majumdar, Director of Advanced Research Projects Agency- Energy (ARPA-E), a U.S. Department of Energy program office. The Forum also included expert panel discussions, exhibits and tours.

This forum assists in advancing communication between attendees, energy engineering researchers, and industry and government members on the problems this sector is currently facing. The Texas A&M Energy Engineering Institute, established under the Texas Engineering Experiment Station (TEES), continues to foster relationships in order to promote research and development of energy resources.
