Exponent’s Thermal Sciences Practice provides services in a wide array of engineering applications and problem-solving ranging from residential and vehicle fire analysis to the investigation of fires and explosions at chemical processes, petrochemical, manufacturing and other industrial facilities. Our engineers also specialize in fluid flow evaluations, such as smoke and plume propagation modeling. We routinely assist our clients in solving their design challenges involving household, commercial and industrial appliances, including heaters, furnaces, boilers and turbines.

The Thermal Sciences Practice is currently hiring Engineers in our Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Phoenix area offices. This position will be responsible for conducting scientific investigation and analysis of thermal processes, ranging from residential and vehicle fires to the investigation of fires and explosions in chemical, mining, and petrochemical industries. Specific duties will include preparation of proposals, examination of physical evidence, conducting engineering calculations, planning and executing experimental test programs, preparing technical reports, and presenting findings to clients.

  • Testing of ignition and combustion properties
  • Explosion and detonation investigations
  • Thermal design analysis
  • Motor vehicle fires
  • Smoke and plume propagation modeling
  • Heat transfer and thermodynamics analysis
  • Heating and cooling equipment design and operation review
  • Chemical kinetics and reactions assessment

Qualifications for this position include:

  • Ph.D. in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering with an emphasis on Thermal Sciences
  • Strong technical background in combustion, thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics and numerical methods
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
  • Hands-on experience in executing experimental programs and the desire and ability to tackle a wide variety of problems within and outside their direct area of expertise
